Timepieces Secrets Revealed
But what is the meaning behind a timepiece, after all?
In theory, time is an abstract concept. It’s based on something very physical, the earth’s rotation around its axis, which helps us define time, but it’s still not so palpable.
Timepieces and watches are a way to “carry” time with us. Simply put, it shows our basic desire to live, it allows us to situate ourselves in time and, consequently, recognize ourselves in the world.
What’s the difference between timepieces and watches?
The timepiece is not just a fancy name for a watch — or, as it’s also called, wristwatch. While watches run on quartz batteries, timepieces work through mechanical or automatic wind movements, which provides smoother strokes and allows them to run under harsher conditions.
Most of them also come with a COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) certificate, to attest how well they keep time.
Although smartwatches nowadays offer different tools, an ordinary one has just basic functions: time and day. Timepieces, on the other hand, feature what is called complications.
In spite of the name, the complication is any function that exists in addition to telling time. Some of the complications a timepiece presents are chronograph, moon-phase, calendar, date window, and a tourbillon.
And forget about plastic when you think of timepieces. The materials used to make them are high-end and durable, such as gold, high-grade steel, platinum, diamond, carbon fiber, and rubies.
This also results in the quality of craftsmanship, and more attention to detail. These characteristics are what make timepieces a true work of art.
More than a luxury accessory, timepieces are an investment: they hold their value and even appreciate over time.
Types of timepieces
As mentioned before, timepieces run through mechanical or automatic wind movements.
Mechanical timepieces are driven by a mainspring which must be wound periodically. The power is generated through a series of gears to power the balance wheel, which oscillates back and forth at a constant rate. An escapement releases the watch’s wheels, resulting in the movement of the timepiece’s hands.
Automatic timepieces use a rotor, or metal weight, to generate power. The rotor oscillates freely inside the timepiece, and every time the wearer moves their wrist, the rotor spins. This spinning motion is what’s made into energy that is stored in the mainspring.
Both types don’t require a battery and present smooth movement, but they are also more sensitive to the environment than regular watches. The main difference between them is that mechanical timepieces need to be wound regularly, once a day would be ideal. Automatic timepieces don’t need this, but they do need to be stored in a watch winder when not in use.
Designs
Timepieces usually come in two different designs: a more minimalistic one, crafted to be worn on formal occasions, and another that is more jewelry-like.
A minimalistic timepiece, also called dress watch, comes with leather straps that hold the case in place. They are designed to be discreet and easily hidden under the shirt cuff, providing a pleasant and gorgeous surprise when they do show up. These are a fashion accessory for people who prefer the elegance of simplicity.
There are timepieces that are more of a show-stopper. They have straps made out of precious metals and, if it’s your style, they can be adorned with diamonds, rubies, and whatever gemstones you fancy. With intricate patterns, they are designed to shine as an exquisite fashion statement.
How to choose a timepiece
Take into consideration the differences between mechanical and automatic timepieces and be honest with yourself about whether you’re going to take the time to wind your mechanical timepiece, for example.
As for the design, it’s mostly about where you’re going to wear your timepiece, and also your personal style. Do you want something for work or is it for other situations? Do you prefer something more discreet or do you want to go all the way into extravagance?
And, of course, think about the functionalities you look for in a timepiece. Just like regular watches, timepieces can be water-resistant, so if that’s a must for you, keep that in mind. Also, consider the complications, the more features you add, the more your timepiece can do for you.
How to use a timepiece
Most timepieces and watches, in general, are designed to be worn on the left wrist. The winding device is placed in such a way that when you wear it on your left wrist, you can easily wind your timepiece without removing it.
That happens because most people are right-handed and don’t use their left hand as much. This makes it less likely for the timepiece to be damaged.
However, there aren’t strict rules about wearing your timepiece on the left wrist, and, although not common, there are designs available for left-handed people.
